Rose McGowan was born on the 5th of September, 1973, in a family of six children. She was raised in a cult called "Children of the Light" by her hippie parents in Italy. Rose remembers her early childhood as a time of carelesness and learning. She attended various artsy schools, and spent her free time playing in the fields with her pet lamb. When Rose was ten, her family moved to Oregon, America after the cult went bust. Rose attended school seriously for the first time, where she spent most of her time in the school libraries, brooding as a loner goth. When she was thirteen, her father's boyfriend convinced her parents that Rose was on drugs, and they shipped her off to a drug rehabillitation center. Rose escaped from the clinic and it wasn't until then that she experimented with drugs. She lived the rest of her teen life moving from place to place, working in small odd-jobs and dancing in gay night clubs to find somewhere to sleep the night. Rose was discovered at the age of 17, by a casting supervisor for Gregg Araki, who approached Rose for the part as Amy Blue in The Doom Generation, after witnessing her refusing to enter a gym. Araki found Rose to be the perfect leading lady and so she was cast at the last minute. Rose's career took off, she was nominated for Best Newcomer at the Independant Spirit Awards, and appeared in numerous small indie productions. In 1997, she met her ex-fiancee Marilyn Manson (Brian Warner) at the premiere of Gummo. The couple became lovers, and announced there engagement in 1999, but they called the quits in February 2001. Manson and Rose both moved on; Manson was seen with porn star Dita Van Tease, and Rose was seen in the arms of Kip Pardue.
